Shelob is described in The Two Towers as an "evil thing in spider-form. Shelob's appearance in Peter Jackson's film trilogy was based on the New Zealand tunnel-web spider. Scholars have noted her opposition to the Elves, and in particular her adversary, Galadriel, whose light helps the hobbits to defeat her darkness. Others have interpreted her as symbolising a sexual threat, with multiple sexual allusions. Some scholars have stated that Shelob is in the literary tradition of female monsters. The plan is foiled when Samwise Gamgee temporarily blinds Shelob with the Phial of Galadriel, and then severely wounds her with Frodo's Elvish sword, Sting. The creature Gollum deliberately leads the Hobbit protagonist Frodo there in hopes of recovering the One Ring by letting Shelob attack Frodo. Her lair lies in Cirith Ungol ("the pass of the spider") leading into Mordor. This means it's likely Gollum had been corrupted enough for the Elven magic to hurt him, which adds even more tragedy to his grim life.Shelob is a fictional monster in the form of a giant spider from J. Elven weapons and items are effective against evil, such as Frodo's glowing Elven blade. The Ring slowly corrupted him, and he even lost some of himself to the Wraith-world, which is where Frodo goes when he becomes "invisible." Due to the corruption of Gollum's body and mind, it's likely that the purity of the Elven materials didn't react well with him.Īlthough there are exceptions on both sides, Sauron and everything associated with him is often viewed as the embodiment of evil, whereas the Elves are seen as good and pure. With over 500 years spent with the One Ring, Gollum became very unnatural, including his extended life. While this definitely explains Gollum's mental trauma and distrust of Elven items, another theory suggests why the rope appears to physically hurt his body.
